"When I started working in Pastry, I was surprised at how quickly the word spread among friends. Suddenly I had requests for showers, birthdays and (yikes!) my first wedding cake!? I didn't have a style or a niche yet, but I did know ONE thing I didn't want to ever do....pillars. I was scared to death of them, lol! My goal was to start a business making fun, off-the-wall cakes. Luckily, the brides who approached me felt the same way. Wedding magazines and reality-tv shows were opening the doors of creativity and they felt more confident to have a wedding that was more about them. They were looking for a more personalized cake too, without the swags and pastel fountains of days gone by. The word spread and I've had an amazing time producing funky, colourful items for nearly 10 years now. I love my job!
Ana and I met at work in the Pastry Department of the kitchen of the Art Gallery of Ontario. We worked together for 6 years. I was in total awe of her perfect cakes and she patiently taught me a lot of her skills. I started up the company and Ana joined on in producing cakes, cupcakes and decorated cookies. She's unbelievable! I learn from her with every order. You could cut yourself on her perfect square cake edges. I'm still utterly jealous!
We owe a big debt to the popularity of shows like the Food Network Wedding Cake Challenges and of course to Ace of Cakes. People just didn't realize before that they could order really fun, wacky cakes like that. Now they come prepared to us with sketches and outlandish requests. It's a real challenge to keep up, but nothing's better than turning that idea into a real cake for them!"
