Talk Like A Pilgrim

What a great chance for a multicultural exercise with your children. The Pilgrims spoke English, but it was a different English! They spoke 17th century English.

We've added lots of new words since then. Ask your child if they can think of some. Hints: What's new these days? Cell phone? DVDs? Television? Source: Plimoth.org.

1. Instead of Hi, how are you? say Good morrow, How now? How do you fare? or What cheer?

2. Instead of Excuse me say Pray pardon me or Prithee pardon me

3. Instead of Congratulations! say Huzzah!

4. Instead of Goodbye say God bye to you, Fare thee well, or Pray remember me.

5. Instead of fireplace say hearth

6. Instead of cat say mouser

7. Instead of pillowcase say pillowbere

8. Instead of stew or porridge say pottage

9. Instead of pants or skirt say breeches or petticoat

10. Instead of backward say arsy varsy

Ask the generations at the table what phrases they used that are no longer in use, and you'll all laugh -- that's spiffy, the cat's pajamas, hunkey dorey. Have fun!
