OH SO EASY
CAKE DECORATING IDEAS...

Copyrighted by Mary Ann Ross 2004

One of my favorite television cooking shows is
SemiHomemade with Sandra Lee.
Some of the below ideas are hers, some are mine.

Flowers using Luster Dust make them prettier

Edible Flowers and Fruits
Easy, Easy. Make, bake and frost a cake. A cake that has not been frosted is very pretty when sprinkled lightly with Confectioners White Powdered Sugar. (Later in this article you'll find how to use stencils, Cocoa Powder and Confectioner's Powdered Sugar for really easy decorating).

FLOWERS:
Add flowers in any arrangement you desire.
Be sure that the flowers you use are small and well shaped and
that each flower has been thoroughly cleaned to be free of any insecticides
used when growing the flowers and blot them dry with paper towels.
Pick the flowers just before you are serving the cake so they remain fresh and pretty.

IMPORTANT:
I only use flowers from my garden because I do NOT use any chemicals.

For an added touch,
simply brush on a little Luster Dust and the flowers will look wet with dew.
Luster Dust is great and this product goes a long way.

Lightly brush on flowers to make them look wet with dew.)

FRUITS
Any small and colorful fruits work or firm fruits that look pretty when they are cut or sliced. Sandra Lee made a beautiful three tiered wedding cake using clusters of green grapes that were frosted (this is how I do it: I beat egg whites, dip individual grapes and I brush it on the clusters and dip or sprinkles with white or colored sanding sugars http://thepartyworks.com/product_info.php/cPath/3_8/products_id/126
Regular sugar crystals can be used but should be placed in plastic bag and crushed to a fine consistency.
Around holiday time, there is plenty of sugared fruits available that make pretty decorations.

Edible Powdered Sugar and Cocoa Powder
Easy and oh so simple.

Tip: This idea has nothing to do with decorating cakes but one of my favorite hints... When rolling out cookie dough, sprinkle the board with white powdered sugar for white cookies and cocoa powder for chocolate cookies instead of using flour.

When you are in a hurry, bake your cake, let it cool. Leave in the pan or remove to a cake platter. If you are using a cake platter, put waxed paper pieces under all parts of the cake, leaving some of the waxed paper exposed. Lightly sprinkle your cake with either sugar or powder, then remove all the waxed paper and you'll have a clean cake platter and a pretty cake.

Stencils are fun and easy to work with and come in various designs that can be used over and over and over for various family celebrations. Visit http://thepartyworks.com/index.php/cPath/3_430

Fondant Do-It-Yourself Cake Decorations
If you want to be a kid again, try "Fondant". It is used like kid's clay but it is edible. Make flat decorations or three-dimensional decorations and be ready to get lots of oooohs and aaaaaahs.... "Did you really make this yourself?" Check out our Cake Scrapbook for ideas but any coloring books, story books, comic books or make up your own designs. Spray Color Mists
Bake and frost your cake, then shake the can, remove the top, aim and spray a little, spray a lot. No longer do you have to tint white frosting to other colors to decorate your cake. Just spray! Learn more at http://thepartyworks.com/index.php/cPath/3_221

And new on the market are ready-to-use, no fuss, no mess Frosting in a Tube in a variety of colors available. I keep them in my pantry and after I've baked and frosted my cake, I add a plastic decorating tip (sold separately and designed to fit on these tubes) to the colors I need and decorate my cake easily and quickly. Remove the plastic tip and re-cap, put back in the pantry to use again at a later time.
